La fotografa italo-americana Stefania Cardillo nasce a New York il 20 Maggio 1986. Piccolissima si trasferisce con la sua famiglia nei Castelli Romani a sud di Roma, dove tutt’oggi vive e lavora come fotografa freelance.
Ben presto l’amore per tutto ciò che è espresso in immagine, concreta o ideata, per le riviste patinate e il disegno, si trasferisce nei suoi studi: si laurea nel 2008 in “Letteratura, Musica e Spettacolo” presso la Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia della Sapienza di Roma e l’anno successivo si iscrive all’istituto CINE-TV “Roberto Rossellini” della capitale dove oltre ad approfondire le sue conoscenze sul cinema e sulle tecniche audiovisive, inizia il suo primo approccio professionale alla Fotografia.
La magia della camera oscura, dei chimici, della pellicola, della carta fotografica e della sala posa la affascinano così tanto da spingerla a dedicarsi completamente allo studio della Fotografia analogica e digitale.
Non abbandona però l’altro suo interesse per la Letteratura e negli stessi anni porta avanti il suo percorso universitario che conclude nel 2012 con una laurea in “Letteratura e Lingua. Studi italiani ed europei”.
Si diploma in Fotografia nel 2014. Collabora dal 2009 con lo studio fotografico e associazione culturale “Imagon” di Roma. Ha curato nel suo territorio diverse mostre in collettiva e personali, opera in diversi generi fotografici, ama viaggiare e fare lunghe passeggiate esplorative con la sua Canon.
Si dedica durante la sua annuale permanenza in Irlanda alla Fotografia paesaggistica e alla Street Photography, esperienza che le permette di confermare a se stessa quanto sia complesso e limitativo allo stesso tempo cercare di trovare una definizione del proprio essere:
“La Fotografia mi permette di ricordare quanto si è inevitabilmente suggestionati dallo scorrere del tempo, dall’alternarsi delle proprie emozioni, dalle nostre esperienze che ci cambiano, la Fotografia è il mio specchio quando sono trasportata ora dai colori della natura, ora dalla bellezza di un corpo umano, ora da un gesto di un passante, ora dagli eventi che mi circondano, ora dalle luci e dalle ombre create da oggetti, ora dalla completa incapacità di esprimermi in qualcosa.
La continua sperimentazione nella Fotografia mi ricorda quanto a volte può essere diversa la foto precedente da quella successiva dello stesso soggetto: ho ancora troppo da imparare, troppo da esplorare, troppo da vedere, la Fotografia è una maestra dalle forme meravigliose che mi spinge a cercare di continuo e in divenire, una completa definizione di essa, per cercarne, una in me stessa e nell’altro da me”.
The italian and american photographer Stefania Cardillo, was born in New York on 20th of May in 1986. She moved to Italy when she was very young close to Rome where she’s lived and worked as a freelance photographer.
Love for the conceived and concrete image, for the magazine and for drawing became her studies: she gets a degree in “Literature, Music and Entertainment” at the University “Sapienza” of Rome in 2008; one year later she enrolls at CINE-TV “Roberto Rossellini” in the Italian capital where she enriches her knowledge about cinema and audiovisional technical, she then starts her first professional approach with the photography.
The magic of dark room, chemical products, celluloid, photographic paper and studio attracts her so much so that she decides to study the analogical and digital photography completely.
She doesn’t give up with her interest for Literature and at the same time she finishes University in 2012 getting a degree in “Literature and Languages. Italian and European studies”.
She graduates in Photography in 2014, she has had a collaboration with cultural association and studio “Imagon” since 2009 in Rome. She has organized different and many photographic exhibitions some which have been collective and the others personal. She works with different kind of photography, loves travelling and taking long walks exploring with her Canon.
During her yearly stay in Ireland she tests the natural pictures and Street Photography: this experience confirms her how much is complicated and restrictive at the same time finding a definition about own self:
“The Photography gives me the possibility of remembering how much we are influenced by pass of the time, by variation of own emotions, by our experiences that change us, the Photography is my mirror when I am surrendered by the colours of Nature, by the beauty of human body, by the gesture of pedestrian, by the events which are around me, by the lights and shadows which are created by objects, by the complete inability to express myself in something.
The continuous experimentation in the Photography reminds me how much different the previous picture can be than the other following with the same subject: I still have a lot to learn, too much to explore, too much to watch and see, the Photography is a wonderful teacher which encourages me in searching continuously and becoming, a complete definition of it, for searching, one in myself and another one in the others different from me”.
